Who is the Seniors Advocate in BC?

How is this organization structured to meet the needs of BC Seniors?

How does the office of Senior Advocate  (OSA) affect our community?

On March 19, 2014, the Government of British Columbia announced the appointment of Isobel Mackenzie as Canada’s first Seniors Advocate. The Office of Seniors Advocate was the first office of its kind in Canada

As the voice of seniors in B.C., Ms. Mackenzie has a broad mandate to monitor and review system-wide issues affecting the well being of seniors and raise awareness about resources available to them. The Advocate also makes recommendations to government and those who deliver seniors’ services related to health care, personal care, housing, transportation and income support.

The yearly reports, Monitoring Seniors Services, focus on key services in the province that fall under the Advocate’s legislated mandate. It highlights where seniors’ needs are being met and where improvements are most needed.  Access to health care, appropriate housing, adequate transportation, enough income to meet basic needs such as food, shelter and medicines and protection from abuse and neglect are key to the health and well being of seniors.

Ms. Mackenzie has over 20 years experience working in the provincial and community context with seniors in home care to community services with paid and volunteer staff.  Her work in implementation of a new model of dementia care has become national best practice.
